CLAIM
At a Tonse Alliance rally at Njamba, Saulos Chilima claimed that the terms of the Alliance agreement are such that he will be given the position of minister of finance once the Alliance gets to power, he also claimed that they had agreed with Lazarus Chakwera that he will serve one term and hand over power to him (Chilima)
CONCLUSION
The agreements of the Tonse Alliance are not known. However, in the event of a win, Lazarus Chakwera will retain the powers to appoint cabinet members and can choose to contest again as he will not be barred by the constitution.
- Terms of the Tonse Alliance have not been made public. MCP and UTM delegated powers to their respective heads to negotiate those terms
- In a televised interview on Times Television, Lazarus Chakwera dismissed claims by Saulos Chilima and indicated that the alliance had not agreed on ministerial positions nor on him serving one term
- As per Constitution of Malawi, only the President has the powers to choose a cabinet or appoint a person into a ministerial position meaning even if the Tonse Alliance wins, the power to appoint cabinet ministers will be the preserve of Lazarus Chakwera who currently heads the Alliance
